An album full of solid and melodic tracks that have a heavy backbone.

This is overworked and underpaid Phil Vincent's twentieth album, hence the title, although it may also refer to the scantily clad women Vincent insists on plastering all over his inner sleeves, so take from that what you will. In the end, an internet search is no less awkward than looking for Asia's 'XXX' album, although the letter is way more specific about the nationality of the girls Google throws up. Anyway...

When we say this is Vincent's twentieth solo album, it's a very apt description, as he does just about everything he can on his own, save for a few guests. To do this with such consistent quality over twenty albums shows just how talented Vincent is because I can't remember an album of his that I haven't enjoyed.

Admittedly, he doesn't have the all-round appeal of bands like Def Leppard, and this isn't AOR by the numbers designed to get sales. This is just a guy writing and performing music he likes and hopes you like as well. It's got quite a gritty sound and is reasonably heavy with nice melodies as well as Vincent's quite unmistakable voice. He's not the best vocalist out there, but he holds his own and has at least got an individual sound, and there's plenty of very nice guitar throughout as well. I tend to prefer Vincent's solo releases as I just like the way he thinks when unencumbered by another guitarist or singer, not that he doesn't hook up with talented people.

Twenty years and twenty solo albums (plus loads of collaboration records) later, I still enjoy Vincent's music. 'XX' is definitely one of his stronger offerings, an album full of solid and melodic tracks that have a heavy backbone. So happy 20th birthday to Phil Vincent, and happy days to any fans that pick this up.
