Skull Fist / Neuronspoiler - The Lounge Camden, London (UK) - 04 November 2018

Neurospoiler are an enthusiastic opener. They have definitely introduced some light and shade into the set since I last saw them at the Underworld but there's still plenty of shredding, flying hair and no compromise old skool metal which appeals to a Skull Fist crowd.

Skull Fist have not played England for at least four years and the packed crowd are straining forward with excitement around the small stage making the atmosphere hot, sweaty and mosh like from the off. Vocalist Zach Slaughter having had vocal surgery told me it has affected him a lot, but to me he is still screaming like old days and the band still has the charisma to inspire life long fans with many sporting the band logo as tattoos to show their commitment. Opening with 'Ride the Beast' from debut 'Head of the Pack' the crowd cannot get enough.

Older tracks are there like 'Bad For Good', 'No False Metal' and 'Head of the Pack' but they also unsurprisingly feature tracks from the new album 'Way of the Road' which the crowd is instructed to buy as the band is broke. Smiley bassist Casey is now poncho-less but no less a dude and guitarist Johnny sporting a new 80s Robin George style haircut can still shred like a demon although there's a few soulful solos in there too. Zach's broken neck from a skateboard accident has now healed and he still takes Johnny on his shoulders for a synchronized shred causing a paparazzi style photo flurry in the crowd.

The rising sun red and white Flying V is still surviving albeit battered and all taped up and Zach is a mean shredder too. There's more than one 'Skull Fist, Skull Fist' chant during proceedings and girls almost fainting with excitement at the front. I swear Zach announces he's going to take a shit as he leaves, maybe I misheard but he used to be famous for his pants down feet and underpants around ankles toilet selfies on facebook so I guess that's be right for a celebration of an undoubted triumphant return to the UK.

Skull Fist Live 2

There's another band after Skull Fist but a lot of the crowd does not hang around for them including me. Unfortunately the lure of an after party with Skull Fist proved too much for most. Not that since his surgery Zach doesn't look after himself. He's not drinking and when others go off to drink more he hits the tour bus to sleep about midnight. I don't blame him the band has a lot of promise and we want them to go on and on and on. If they are not careful hard living catches up with vocalists and after the broken neck skateboard accident and partying damage to his vocal chords Zach has already had a number of near misses. Let's hope he has nine lives reflecting the fact that he's such a cool cat despite his slightly goofy side. England has a great deal of affection for Skull Fist let's hope they make it back sooner next time.
