Felix Hagan & The Family - Club Academy, Manchester (UK) - 22 November 2018

Fun on a budget. But what fun. Felix Hagan and his family look like they've rummaged through their dressing-up box, keyboardist Joe wearing a glittery zip up top, Felix sporting a furry gilet and that is absolutely right for this fancy, dancy band. Supporting The Arkells tonight, they made every second of their fourty minutes count.

Felix stayed behind his mic and Flying V, but he's able to when Ellie and Tash rabble-rouse so well, taking vocal lines, harmonising nicely, busting out synchronised dance moves and providing the focal point that gives them that necessary extra something.

The band are road tested, Stuart on drums and bassist Chris lock in beautifully, allowing those marvellous melodies to soar; on last rip-snorting release 'Attention Seeker', they were a wonderfully odd chart offer, here they toughen up a little of course, single 'Gene Kelly' is as infectious as we'd like, 'Delerium Tremendous' comes on like a heavy Soft Cell and Felix never takes his tongue far from his cheek, exhorting the crowd to give him "spirit fingers"; hands aloft, we happily comply.

In fact the crowd is a big 'un, seemingly thinning out for the headliners, fans who know the words and can sing heartily to 'Kiss The Misfits' and bounce to 'Hey, I Want You', a feeling pervading that this band are onto something special. Tonight, they brought back memories of the delightful Do Me Bad Things and devilish Deaf School; that is high praise indeed.

Art and abandonment on stage, Felix Hagan and the Family were astounding, Delighted Debbie, seeing them for the first time, converted. Delirious? Oh yes. Tremendous? Definitely.
