Perfect on all accounts.

‘In Progress’ is the long overdue and highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Artwork,’ Work of Art’s excellent debut from 2008. However, there is no question that it was well worth the wait because Robert Sall and company (Lars Safsund on vocals and Herman Furin on drums) unleash an utterly brilliant record for fans of both classic, west coast AOR as well as modern Melodic Rock. Exploding with a set of 12 magnificent songs, ‘In Progress’ is the perfect admixture of both styles featuring great melodies and huge choruses. The impact of the songs is further enhanced due to an incredible mix thanks to the involvement from Rami Yacoub (Westlife, Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, etc.). Rami mixed half of the album while vocalist, Lars Safsund utilized the lessons learned from him and mixed the remaining six.

The result is an album that features more powerful drums, stronger vocals and heavier guitars. Although having multiple people involved in the mixing is sometimes detrimental to an album’s cohesiveness, I am please to report that the production is consistent throughout and the album never suffers a moment. The record opens with the uptempo rocker, ‘The Rain,’ and never looks back. Each successive track is as equally satisfying as its predecessor until the culmination of ‘One Step Away,’ comprising a bridge section reminiscent of the groove found on Toto’s ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You.’ Although every track is a keeper and favorites are hard to choose, ‘Never Love Again,’ ‘Emilie,’ Castaway’ and ‘The Rain’ currently rank at the top of my list. This album leaves little doubt as to its place on this year’s “Best Of…” awards, as it is excels in all areas. I encourage not only every fan of WoA, but every reader of this review to drop what they are doing and purchase a copy of this stunning sophomore release from one of the most talented acts on the scene today.

It is clearly time for WoA to break out and start performing live to deliver these songs and their music to a wider audience. Along with Toby Hitchcock’s ‘Mercury Down’ album (click here to read the Rocktopia review), I cannot bestow ‘In Progress’ higher accolades, as it is perfect on all accounts. Let’s just hope it isn’t another three years before the next installment…well done!
