Dan Reed - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 15th March 2013

Dan Reed is back with a vengeance; after the meteoric success of the Dan Reed Network, his departure from the music scene was a loss. Following his solo comeback a few years back with 'Coming Back For Air', Reed is touring on the back of his superb latest album, 'Signal Fire'.

Reed's band is young and talented and a good foil for his talent. With no fanfare, he launched into a trio of strong numbers from the new album – 'All I Need Is You', the title track itself and 'Only Love'. The sound was in that rare territory between gritty rock and an organic acoustic vibe where you can hear the words and hear the individual notes being played. The professionalism of the band and the sheer quality of Reed's voice shone throughout; there were some stellar moments – one was 'Rainbow Child', slightly toned down from the original but still amazingly catchy. The highlight for me was the epically constructed 'Ritual' and it was a master class in performing rock music live. Starting with an interesting and very different drum solo, the catchy intro of the song kicked in and built to a climax of one of the most wailing guitar solos ever heard and then back to the vocal conclusion of the song.

About seven songs from the new album were played, demonstrating Reed´s confidence in the music and it was clear the bulk of the audience already owned the album and knew the songs. Out of them, 'Avalanche', one of the more up-tempo songs, came over really well and in general the songs worked and sounded even better live than on the CD itself.
There were of course the expected 'Closer' and 'Stronger Than Steel', which were met with rapturous applause, and it is clear Reed is as comfortable in an acoustic setting as he is in an electric one. Reed's warm personality turned the night into a special one and there is no doubt he is one further big rung up his comeback ladder.

One of the best gigs I have been to – 'Nuff said.
