For the beginner, this is a great introduction to MSG.

These days Michael Schenker seems to be in the rock press for his drunken onstage attempts to play the guitar which doesn’t help his career one bit. But let’s not forget the fact that he has an incredible back catalogue and at his most creative he is easily one of the finest guitarists in the business. The compilation collects the “best” material from the Michael Schenker Group back catalogue between the years 1980 and 1984. The ex-Scorpions and UFO guitarist formed MSG after returning briefly to the Scorpions during the ‘Lovedrive’ era. Despite receiving lucrative offers from Ozzy Osbourne and Aerosmith he wanted to be in control of his own destiny and forming his own band was the way to do that. Their 1980 self-titled debut is still a classic and despite several line-up changes every release until 1984s ‘Rock Will Never Die’ is certainly worthwhile and this CD picks 16 of the best tracks.

The handy thing about this collection is that it contains some tracks previously unavailable on CD, namely, a radio edit of ‘Cry For The Nations,’ the live B-side ‘Into The Arena,’ the B-side ‘Girl From Uptown’ and the original mix of ‘Captain Nemo.’ More familiar songs are ‘Armed And Ready’ and a live take of UFO’s ‘Doctor Doctor.’ Another live song is ‘Victim Of Illusion’ from the brilliant ‘One Night At Budokan.’ An excellent release, this collection also comes with sleeve notes by Classic Rock’s Dave Ling. For the beginner, this is a great introduction to MSG.
