If this CD were a beer it would probably be a supermarket brand rather than a premium label beer.

Back again, after their debut ‘Let It Roll’ it’s business as usual for this band from Winnipeg, Canada and their brand of blue collar rock that tips its hat to the great US bands of the 70s. Main man Trevor Knox Millar, who plays guitar and sings, has a voice that falls somewhere between a sneering Mick Jagger and Alice Cooper. You know from the revving engines of the intro and the first guitar chord that it might not win innovative album of the year, but it has a familiarity and it’s played with enough commitment that you can almost smell the vinyl.

‘So Glad To See You’ kicks things off with a raucous Quireboy style rocker with nice upfront keyboard. There are a few other tracks that possess similar punch. ‘Wicked Woman’ melds The Rolling Stones with The Guess Who, ‘I Like It’ throbs pleasingly and is music designed for cruising in your car to, and ‘You Won’t Catch Me’ includes some acoustic guitar under the riffs to add colour. There’s more Stones swagger on ‘I Know What You Want’ and ‘Down Here In The Sludge’ gives you some Grand Funk Railroad rocking. ‘Hunter’ and ‘Summer Moon’ have an almost Southern rock flavour but these tracks sadly aren’t as memorable.

However, all the tracks benefit from fine guitar solos that last long enough to drain a beer. Indeed, if this CD were a beer it would probably be a supermarket brand rather than a premium label beer as some of the songs are throwaway, but the upshot is, supermarket or premium, you get the same buzz off it. Millar says he’s going to continue living in a van down by the river if need be to continue making records. If you’re partial to no nonsense rock of the kind American radio was built on, then you should check this out and Millar can upgrade to a mobile home.
