A rewarding aural journey into the unknown - totally free of charge.

The band, or rather “entity” called Zoner originates from Nicosia in Cyprus and is the brainchild of Antonis Demetriou who, fed up with being in bands that got him nowhere, decided to form his own so that he wouldn't have to compromise artistically or otherwise ever again.

Actually this entity is a one man rock/metal band with a sound and influences that scream 70s and reek 80s. But it is by no means a retro band. As Antonis says “importantly it's NOT ‘new’ or ‘nu’ (that gets old next week) or NWOFSODMM (New Wave Of Fuckin’ Songless One Dimensional Modern Metal). There’s no ‘cookie monster’ vocals, no bullshit dark imagery, no ridiculous metal cliche mannerisms, no fantasy lyrics, no bloody double kick drums from start to finish...and the list goes on...BUT if you missed the way records used to be...a rewarding aural journey into the unknown for 40 minutes” then this is what you have been seeking.

The extravagantly-titled album certainly features a myriad of what Antonis would regard as “appropriate” influences and as a first attempt there is much to commend the guy’s determination, his songwriting (such amusing and wonderfully conceived songs: listen closely to ‘Frrreakout’ and ‘Dissolving Seasons’) and his performance skills – although it does get a wee bit “kitchen sink” at times with more twists and turns than a fleeing snake, as is particularly the case with album opener ‘Progressive Entrapment’. Sadly, however, some of the impact of Antonis’ work is lost with the recording quality being little better than a reasonable quality demo – and in reality that is what this album is, I suppose – as it so badly needs some top end. It does rather sound as though it were recorded in a biscuit tin at times!

Notwithstanding this shortcoming the album is beguiling in so many ways, and the more you play delightful tracks such as ‘Orison’, ‘The Perfect Victim (It Ain’t Me)’ and ‘Elysian Reminder’ they really make an impact with their stylistic reminders of days gone by. You can discover these and everything else on ‘Spectraphonic Deviation’ for yourselves totally free of charge either by ordering a physical copy of the album complete with its wonderful artwork by Ed Unitsky from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by going to www.zonermusic.com for free mp3 downloads and streaming non CD tracks.

You don’t get an offer like this every day, and I would like to think that the readers of Rocktopia would like to support Mr Demetriou in his endeavour to present good, honest rock music to the masses (eventually!)
