Second album in and Prospekt have thrown down the gauntlet with this superb release.

Oxford, UK is known as the City Of Dreaming Spires and home to Inspector Morse (and Lewis), Lewis Carroll, the real Alice (In Wonderland), Harry Potter, CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien and a young Progressive Metal act called Prospekt. Their fine debut, 'The Colourless Sky', came out a couple of years back and it showed a lot of promise. To be honest, with its many centuries of academic and social history, Oxford is probably not the first place you'd go looking for an act like Prospekt, but go looking you should because you'll soon discover five young musicians who have the songs and drive to take on the big European/US heavyweights of the Prog Metal genre.

The music the band plays easily fits in with the likes of Seventh Wonder, Circus Maximus and Cloudscape, yet there's also a dark edge that reminds the listener of Kamelot, Symphony X and Pagan's Mind (which is no bad thing). However, since the debut, things have changed slightly with new vocalist Michael Morris replacing Richard Marshall and this appointment has given Prospekt a whole new lease of life.

After the obligatory intro, the band hit us with the stunning 'The Illuminated Sky' which is seven minutes plus of tightly constructed riffs, soaring vocals and clever arrangements that demonstrate just how far this band have come in just a short space of time. 'Titan' is next and it's a song where the band's guitarist and main song-writer Lee Luland gets to show off; the solo on this track is breath-taking but cleverly it also takes nothing away from the other musicians or the music itself. 'Beneath Enriya' has some stunning riffs but the subtle keyboards used throughout only enhance the song giving it a classy Melodic Rock slant. 'Alien Makers Of Discord' is, at first, all about guitars and aggression, with guest Greg Howe chipping in a few riffs and solos, but then Marshall's commanding vocal presence takes over and his clever use of melodies gives this song a very pleasing and enjoyable feel. Finally, there is the epic 'Where Masters Fall' which constitutes fourteen minutes of remarkably beautiful Prog Metal that, whilst full of heavy and technical Prog Metal stylings, still has melodies to spare; a killer track and no mistake.

Second album in and Prospekt have thrown down the gauntlet with this superb release. I wonder who'll be brave enough to pick it up.
