I have been impressed by the quality of the song-writing and musicianship.

Gene Loves Jezebel is like buses for me; having reviewed the re-released 'Heavenly Bodies' in the last issue of 'Fireworks'*, I now have the band's first new music since 2003's 'Exploding Girls'. If you don't know the history of the band, it's easy to get a little confused because there are now two viable versions of the group, this is due to the fact that in the early nineties the Aston brothers split the band with both claiming ownership. This version is Jay Ashton's and so features the distinctive vocal stylings that were a big part of the early signature sound of Gene Loves Jezebel. The group now consists of Ashton, guitarist James Stevenson with a rhythm section of bassist Pete Rizzo and drummer Chris Bell.

Opening track 'Charmed Life (Never Give In)' shows the haunting depth of Aston's vocals, whilst also showcasing how influential the Electronica keyboard sound is going to be through on the album. 'Summertime' has a very Pop Rock feel, transporting you back to the mid-eighties Alternative scene. The release breezes through in a much similar vein, with some more laid-back tracks such as 'How Do You Say Goodbye (To Someone That You Love)' and 'Ain't It Enough'.

Stevenson has a wonderful guitar style; whilst not over the top, his gentle sonics, along with some deep bass lines from Rizzo, make the songs just that level above a Pop offering. 'Cry For U' is the Rockiest number on the album, at times sounding like a heavier version of the Pet Shop Boys. The title track, or to give it its full name 'I Don't Want To Dance Underwater' is my favourite cut, and the vocals, at times, remind me of Neil Young as it drifts the album to a fine conclusion.

If you would have asked me at the start of the year to listen to Gene Loves Jezebel, you would have received a strange look. However, I have to say I have been impressed by the quality of the song-writing and musicianship. Whilst this new album doesn't change direction, the classic sound of the band from their peak period has been ably replicated. I accept that listeners of a heavier musical persuasion may not appreciate this, however, I am confident that fans of a more melodic nature would enjoy the wonderful musical meanderings of Gene Loves Jezebel. Go on... give it a try!
