The foundations are in place but to take the next step they need to master walking in a straight line before sprinting all over the damn place.

Although it's commendable for bands to stretch their stylistic boundaries, sometimes keeping it simple would be the path best travelled. US Blues-based quartet Anthony Rosano And The Conqueroos showcase many fine attributes on this zesty sophomore release, but a strong identity isn't one of them, as they hurtle around the landscape of American music like a dippy canine chasing a posse of frenzied squirrels.

Recorded in New Orleans and produced by Mike Zito, this enjoyably unfocussed effort is the groove-laden sound of a group who are either still trying to figure out what they do best, or aren't bothered about an overarching game plan. From ripping Blues Rock and rootsy, busking, misty-eyed Soul to old-school swingers, funky shuffles and Southern anthemics, they casually jump from one style to the next without establishing the kind of unique character that's needed to bind such eclectic excursions together.

This creates confusion about what the band really are, and what, beyond having a little fun, they aim to achieve. Do they just want to play these songs for audiences and enhance their strong reputation as a live act, or are they trying to fashion a successful career? If it's the latter, then a sharper sense of direction is needed in order to forge an idiosyncratic sonic signature from some promising qualities.

Anthony Rosano's average singing voice, which resembles a less commanding and charismatic version of The Cult's Ian Astbury, can't always deliver the emotional goods, but his fret-work impresses as he solos in a refreshingly off-the-cuff manner and deploys fiery slide riffs in unison with JB Bustillos' tasty harmonica wailing. The multi-talented Bustillos also adds a wistful E-Street sax to 'Long Island Sound', a moving autobiographical number that could be Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Tuesday's Gone' or Bruce Springsteen's 'My Hometown' reminiscing about their glory days. It's the albums shining diamond and suggests that abandoning their competent, jack-of-all-trades approach, and thus committing to a specific trajectory, will result in less good songs and more great ones.

The foundations are in place but to take the next step they need to get serious, find a better singer and master walking in a straight line before sprinting all over the damn place.
