Devilfire's highly recommended debut reminds me of the great British debut Rock albums from the likes of Gun, Little Angels and Serpentine.

Devilfire (originally called Devilstar) is a five-piece band from the birthplace of British Heavy Metal – Birmingham. They are the brainchild of producer Alex Cooper (Shy, The Quireboys' Spike, Ginger Wildheart) who handles lead vocals, with the remainder of the band consisting of drummer Lars Wickett (Uli Jon Roth), bassist Davey Bennett (Pop Will Eat Itself) and guitarists Baz Blackett and Richard Bloomer-Davies. One look at a picture of the band and you know it's not fluffy AOR that they are purveying. Instead, it is very Melodic Hard Rock that's coupled with outstanding song-writing and a huge emphasis on melody. This is all augmented by a great production, courtesy of Cooper and Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine); the latter also mixed the album.

The album kicks off with a couple of Rockers, 'Ready For War?' and the urgent 'She's Like Fire'. However, it's not until the pace drops that the quality increases with some magnitude. Starting with the brilliant '(In And Out Of Love) All Of The Time', with its underlying Blues guitar supporting a great emotional vocal by Cooper, this is then followed by the anthemic 'Waiting For A Rockstar' which really should be a huge MTV hit. The autobiographical 'Lay It On The Line' keeps up the quality, whilst the Melodic Rock of 'Kill Your Love' has a Gun-like 'Steal Your Fire' sound to it.

'Tear Me Apart' is far from a poor song, however, it suffers from coming after four very memorable tracks. 'God Give Me Vengeance' and 'Devil In Your Eyes' are selections that further highlights the band's great musicianship. The heaviest song on the album is '(You Gotta) Revolution', replete with gang backing vocals, which wouldn't have been out of place on the last Dead Daisies opus. The first single off the album is the mid-paced 'She's Always On The Run', although the Rocking 'A Thousand Times' is more representative to my ears of the quality and style of Devilfire's music. The album concludes with the laudable ballad 'Somehow' where the acoustic guitar is in the vein of the Scorpions' classic 'Always Somewhere'.

Devilfire's highly recommended debut 'Dark Manoeuvres' reminds me of the great British debut Rock albums from the likes of Gun, Little Angels and Serpentine.
