Contains many fine tunes that have been well written and performed.

This is the debut release from Birmingham's Big Wolf Band who were formed in 2015 by Jonathan "Big Wolf" Earp (guitar and vocals) and Mick Jeynes (bass) to play their style of Bluesy Rock. Tim Jones (drums) and Paul Brambani (keys) complete the current line-up.

There is a very relaxed feel to this album. The music just flows along quite effortlessly with its mix of vintage and contemporary Blues styles, and Earps' gritty vocal style complements the songs perfectly giving them a Southern US vibe. There is also plenty of fine lead guitar work going on throughout with subtle counterbalance piano/keyboards supporting in the background.

The album opener, 'Heaven's Got The Blues', is a mid-paced Rocker with plenty of bite that could easily have been at home on an early ZZ Top or Lynyrd Skynyrd album. 'Done Wrong By You' and 'Hot Blooded Woman' have more of a Classic Blues sound, whereas 'Love That Hurts', 'Rolling With Thunder' and 'One More Time' have a more contemporary feel.

'Darkest Of My Days' and 'If I Ever Loved Another Woman' are typical slow Southern-styled moody numbers that really convey the heartfelt emotions of the lyrics. 'Long Time Mary' has a Honky-Tonk upbeat feel in the classic fifties-sounding guitar/piano interplay, while the title track, 'A Rebel's Story', has a classic seventies Free type feel to it and should become a real live favorite.

'Been Here Too Long' and 'Love Isn't Free' are both slow Rockers with some nice guitar licks complementing the vocals and some understated keyboard accompaniment. 'I Don't Love You' kicks off with an up-tempo drum beat similar to Cheap Trick's 'I Want You To Want Me' before getting into the main part of the song where both the guitar and keyboards get the opportunity to really cut loose.

While this release doesn't offer anything particularly new to the genre, it does, however, contain many fine tunes that have been well written and performed. This is a release best enjoyed by people with a taste for the likes of The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gary Moore with my personal picks being '...Thunder', '...Woman' and '...Hurts'.
