No doubt that this is a collection of talented musicians, however the manner in which it is presented is rather polite and tiresome.

Creating a blend of folk and rock, Magna Carta have been making music since 1969 and over their 35 albums have sold an amazing 8 million units. Gentle and meandering would be the best description of what you'll find on both the reissued 1982 'Midnight Blue' and the new collection of live material 'Live And Let Live', and if I was to be brutally honest, my first encounter with the music of Magna Carta has left me rather nonplussed. There's no doubt that this is a collection of talented musicians, however the manner in which it is presented is rather polite and tiresome, especially across the nineteen tracks on 'Midnight Blue'. If however you have a liking for this gentle folk/country/rock (almost AOR) outlook, then I have to say that this package is beautifully presented and brimming with extras. 'Midnight Blues' has two 'additional tracks' and six 'bonus tracks', not that I really know the difference between additional and bonus, but the main point being that they are as strong as, and in some cases even better than, the original songs from the album. 'Live And Let Live' also adds a lot to the release as it collects live recordings from throughout the band's career and represents them as one continuous concert. The acoustic and vocal based tracks also fare better in this setting, with more character and flow being evident in the songs. I have to say that I found this to by far the more entertaining of the two discs and the only one of the two that I could see myself visiting again.

As ever with Angel Air, the booklet that accompanies the discs comes with an excellent and interesting essay courtesy of Spencer Leigh and photos that span the career of the band, all of which is housed in a classy digi-pack. Not one of my favourite Angel Air releases from recent times, but for those of you who are fans of Magna Carta there is much to recommend in this release, but it definitely isn't one for me.
