Sixth album by the Finnish band.

Back for their sixth full album, in 'Doombound' the Tolkein-loving Finns have written and recorded their first concept album. Lyrically, 'Doombound' is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional hero Túrin Turambar from 'Turambar And The Foalókë' which is itself drawn from the Finnish mythological poem 'Kalevala', so in one fell swoop the band have paid tribute to both the legends of their homeland and their Hobbit-forming inspiration.

I'll be the first to admit to having a soft spot for Battlelore. Not only are they a great live band, both visually and musically, but also their material has an atmospheric, wholly organic and unpretentious quality about it; it's not forced, and it's not commercially polished: they do what they do and they do it very well. So, for example, the vocal interplay between the dual singers – the luscious elfish vocals of Kaisa Jouhki and the guttural orcisms of her male counterpart Tomi Mykkänen – is as natural to the music as the broadsword and warpaint that adorn their stageshow. Behind them, guitarists Jussi Rautio and Jyri Vahvanen, keyboard player Maria Honkanen, bassist Timo Honkanen and drummer Henri Vahvanen create a distinctive battle-torn soundscape, perhaps best demonstrated on the plaintive 'Fate Of The Betrayed'. But from the atmospheric opener 'Bloostained' to the instrumental 'Kielo' which closes the album you can sense the passion with which the band imbue their music. This is genuine, played from the heart not the head, and as exciting and breathtaking as it comes. As a nod to 'Doombound''s lyrical theme one track ('Kärmessurma') is sung entirely in Finnish, and far from detracting from the album this adds greatly to the sense of belonging that runs through its eleven cuts.

Once again, there is a limited edition digipack which features a bonus DVD drawing on material from two live shows and including all the band's promo clips.
