A fun album of seventies Rock with eclectic names and influences thrown in for good measure.

Hollywood Monsters is an LA-based "super-group" composed of vocalist/guitarist Steph Honde and drummer Vinny Appice. There's an array of guest stars of Classic Rock studded amongst the hard-hitting tracks (including Tracey G, Neil Murray and Danko Jones) but you should listen to this album, not for its glitzy names, but for its Hammond-soaked, frenetic, and wickedly fun seventies Rock.

'Evilution' barrels into action. It's driven by Appice's frenzied drumming but the band are fully in control, anchored around a strong rhythm section with a tight guitar hook. Honde's vocals are David Coverdale-like but better, edgy but riding smoothly over the punctual music. It's over before you know it and we're onto 'Always Crashing The Same Car' that broods over fabulously moody bass and guitar riffs. There's a few off-notes lurking here and a feeling the track is dragging its feet but the spiralling bridges more than make up for a lack of melody here and there.

'It's A Lie' is Poppy but crooning with grit grated on the guitar and vocals in all the right places. 'Waiting' takes it down a notch or two and is an example of where the tracks don't truly flow from one to another, something maybe they probably should have given the implication by the opener 'Mysteries Of Life' of "setting the scene". Nevertheless, Honde lilts his way through not a ballad but an easy-going musical wander with all the solace and Psychedelic-feeling of Vanilla Fudge. Oh, and VF's bassist Tim Bogert does indeed guest on this album. There's a floaty instrumental in 'Don't Let It Happen' and a couple of straight-forward enjoyable Rock tracks in 'Another Day In Grey Part II' and 'Everything Is Going To Be Alright'.

'Dreams' has the kind of climactic notes in its opening sequence that command your attention, though the rest of the track is draining. Hammond laces the indulgently polyphonic composition on 'King For A Day' while the bonus cover of 'Fool For Your Loving' is a bassy, free version; the vocals are a little hoarse but the music is beautifully bass-heavy and gig-style loose.

I wouldn't say any of these tracks are "easy-listening" because they demand your curiosity, your memory and definitely a dance or two. Overall, a fun album of seventies Rock with eclectic names and influences thrown in for good measure.
