The narrative gives us something interesting whilst the music conforms to accepted styles.

DJ Mike Read's musical 'Oscar', a paean to Oscar Wilde, famously closed after only one night, whether because of venue issues, poor sales or bad reviews is still up for discussion. Musical Theatre can be hard to pull off, the subject matter can be almost impossible, just look at the National Theatre's version of horror classic 'Carrie'; they can't all be 'Les Miserable'...

Italian vocalist Gabriele Bernasconi (The Clairvoyants) brooks no dissent over this. He thinks big with a Rock Opera based around the corking tale of 'Cain & Abel'. To deliver it, he's asked some well-known people to help too. The band includes Luca Princiotta from Doro on guitars, Kamelot's Oliver Palotai on keys and orchestration with Steve Di Georgio from Testament hammering the bass. Bernasconi himself is joined by a plethora of vocal talent including Andre Matos, Blaze Bailey, Zak Stevens and Amanda Somerville; it is all brilliantly played and sung with a tight and grainy mix really adding to the quality.

The music though... does the concept stifle the music? Regretfully it does. Sometimes this seems to be an exercise in storytelling with the music a secondary consideration. It's very musical theatre, as we might expect, and there is nothing wrong with that. Arjen Lucasson's music might be considered theatrical and that is a wonderful brew. Bernasconi does go for it, really pushing the voices to play the characters, enjoying the emotions, letting the story have its worth. Shame the actually music doesn't really live up to the drama, what you've heard before is here in abundance, from the slightly stodgy feel of 'The First Sacrifice' to the lilting, female-led 'Lilith'. None of this is bad you understand and some is energetically enervating, 'A Wife's Love' decides to go almost full-on Folk, with a violin lead which makes a change, 'Crime, Pain and Penance' takes those gentle airs and throws a party, leading to a Lounge lope when it runs out of steam, whilst 'The First Second' is pushy with the bass leading synth snatches.

Really though, the narrative gives us something interesting whilst the music conforms to accepted styles. That's sort of Symph, nearly Neo, occasionally ordinary. There is a sweep here, just not a big enough brush, a real epic intention with a 16in screen. As things move on, Art X might produce something as big as their dreams, at the moment they are constrained by conformity.
