An allegorical and dystopian tale of love, ignorance, futility and regret.

This is a rare beast in the modern age, a proper, story-telling concept album. 'Feathers And Flesh' is an allegorical and dystopian tale of love, ignorance, futility and regret. But this is no 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' or 'War Of The Worlds'... it's a concept album with balls!

Vocalist Johannes Michael Gustaf Eckerström tells us "It's a fable about an owl who goes to war to stop the sun from rising. It's a tragic story of someone ultimately being set up to fail. She will learn many lessons and encounter many other creatures with ideas of their own. In the end, however, one must ask if something was learned at all."

Each song tells part of the tale, yet also stands alone in style. The Gothenburg band mix Cirque Du Soleil with Swedish Metal, sometimes producing growling, screaming songs that sound like they started life in the Seventh Circle Of Hell but crashed into something else on their way to the light.

'Tooth, Beak and Claw' is a fine example, dark and heavy it suddenly morphs into lunatic Rockabilly. Yet 'Fiddler's Farewell' is clean and sweet, well as much as a Grasshopper mourning the death of his ant friend, the innocent civilian crushed by the war machine – an allegory for so much going on in the world right now.

At times, the album goes back to the concept album roots of themes and anthems and one can almost imagine a cape-clad Rick Wakeman guesting on a live performance. There is a booklet that contains some rather nice artwork (I understand there is a book following next year) but disappointingly there was no lyric sheet and this is one album that needs it!

Does it bring anything new to the table? Probably not. Does it have the soul of a concept album? Yes, it does. There is a generation who have probably not experienced the social aspect of a concept album, so here's the recipe; get half a dozen mates round, add some beer, dim the lights, put 'Feathers And Flesh' on and discuss the concept. Enjoy.
