Bowling For Soup - 'Drunk Dynasty'

An album containing eleven songs with plenty of humour where none of the tracks are too long.

The boys are back in town with a new album. Anyone who is familiar with Bowling For Soup will know precisely what they do and that is precisely what they have done here, albeit with a couple of surprises.

It's an album containing eleven songs with plenty of humour where none of the tracks are too long, making the record's total running time about thirty-six minutes. There are the typical Soup themes, starting with opener 'She Used To Be Mine' which, if you haven't guessed, is a lost girl regrets song; it's up-tempo with all the usual humour and an "f" word. 'Shit To Do' probably explains why boy lost girl in first place and also features the "f" word – something tells me that this will have a certain label on the front. 'Hey Diane' is a fairly catchy song that saturates the memory cells while 'Go To Bed Mad' puts forward the theory that nice boobs can solve any problem, aided by a nice lead break in the middle which is a bit unusual. 'Catalyst' is about how the girl made the guy a better person and I found my feet tapping to this although it is not a fast song. It does feature some nice harmony vocals too.

'She Doesn't Think That It's Ever Gonna Work Out' wins the prize for the longest title, one which is fairly self-explanatory. 'Don't Be A Dick' sees Jaret Reddick doing relationship counselling while 'Stop Doing That' is a song that'll no doubt register with any guy who is in a relationship. 'Hey Jealousy' is about the realisation that if he had not been so distrusting earlier, he wouldn't be alone today and 'As Happy As Happy Gets' groups envy and jealousy together with the surprises of female vocals and effective slide-guitar. Final track, 'Drinking Beer On A Sunday' is Southern Blues and Hillbilly type offering that features acoustic slide-guitar which again is different. As I listened to this, I started to hear something else in there which I eventually (somewhat) pinned down to a real strong tip of the hat to Queen's '39'.

So that's it for 'Drunk Dynasty', an album with a couple of surprises and quite a lot of acoustic guitar if you listen carefully. Although some of the subject matter would make normal people depressed, the music is actually upbeat and happy-ish which is typical Bowling For Soup.
