It's Heavy Metal with melody – what's not to like?

'Lost In The Black Divide' is Space Vacation's fourth release to date and the musical style of the ten tracks is very much in the vein of the heavier eighties NWOBHM, but also straying into Classic Rock territory on occasion. The songs make good use of the talents of both guitarists with plenty of dual guitar riffing and soloing. They even manage to include some keyboards on a slower number, definitely not what you would expect after the opening tracks.

'Devil To Pay' kicks off the proceedings – this is a fast-paced rocker with an opening guitar riff that is similar to that of the early Dio albums and a three-chord opening bridge that reminds me of Dark Star's 'Lady Of Mars'. 'Save Your Breath' is a mid-pace rocker that gallops along in the style of Iron Maiden, whereas 'Stay Away' concentrates on a dual guitar riff not dissimilar to Praying Mantis or Tokyo Blade. There is also some nice bass work going in the background that leads to a fast guitar solo for the finale. 'See You Again' is up next and to me the twin guitar attack found here is pure Thin Lizzy. 'Roll The Dice' opens with a base riff leading into the song which has a more classic feel to it with smatterings of Rainbow and UFO thrown in. 'Live By The Sword' is back to an Iron Maiden style, while 'Enemy' with its power chord riff and melodies reminds me of Shooting Star or Def Leppard.

'The Black Divide' is the epic track for this album and it comprises of a number of sections, both fast and slow, and contains good chunky riffing with driving bass and drums – there's hints of Metallica and plenty of Iron Maiden gallop. 'Reason Or Rhyme' introduces the aforementioned keyboards and it's a much lighter song than the rest of the album, yet still manages to build up the pace after a slow start. 'Through The Door' is a song that looks to have taken different riffs and licks from the NWOBHM period and wrapped them all up into one song while still managing to keep you guessing where you might have heard the various parts before.

This is a fine album that should appeal to a wide range of Rock fans due to the various musical influences and fine execution of the ideas by the band; it's Heavy Metal with melody – what's not to like?
