There are just so many other options in this genre to choose from that 'Dream Catch' is one that can easily be passed over.

Functioning as another creative outlet from his regular post as guitarist with Progressive Metal band MindSplit, Mathias Holm Klarin is releasing another all-instrumental album entitled 'Dream Catch'. Like some of guitar's finest instrumentalists, you can hear the influence of Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker and Neo-Classical era Tony MacAlpine in his playing. Ten years in the making (since the release of his first solo album) and comprising of just seven tracks, the clear expectation is that each composition will deliver an impressive musical statement. As far as song durations are concerned, 'A Past Reflection' is the only track that doesn't meet (or exceed) the six minute mark. However, track length is hardly a guarantee of a good song and sadly, many of these compositions feel unfinished.

As far as the album's positive attributes are concerned, once it breaks into full stride, the title track offers a nice Middle Eastern melody and features some of Klarin's most lyrical and insouciant playing. 'In Tears' is another clear standout; it finds Klarin at his most lyrical, showcasing his command of the vibrato bar which really adds to the emotion of his phrasing.

The aforementioned '...Reflection' is another track worthy of mention, but it suffers at the hand of a premature fadeout. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is not as enticing. 'Flow Your Mind' is a disjointed affair that features an interlude that will draw immediate comparison to Steve Vai's 'Erotic Nightmares'. However, the transitions are too severe and the melodic ideas do not develop in a cohesive fashion. What's more 'reBorn Identity' and 'Green Water' are relatively derivative affairs that offer nothing new or inspired.

It is always difficult to find so little to enjoy from someone who is a clearly talented guitarist, but the songs are sadly just not up to par. While the proverbial bar for Instrumental Rock Guitar (i.e. Shred) has been raised to dizzying heights, expectations of these musicians – both relative and absolute – have risen accordingly. There are just so many other options in this genre to choose from that 'Dream Catch' is one that can easily be passed over.
