Truly impressive.

Presenting for your aural delectation, here we have the sophomore release from ex-Threshold/Power Quest guitarist Pete Morten. Despite having a band name, in essence, this is a solo album with Morten playing guitars, bass, keyboards and showing what a fine vocalist he is to boot. The drums are provided by his old friend and long-term collaborator Damon Roots. Morten also designed the deeply complex artwork is there no end to his talents?

Given Morten's previous position in Threshold and Power Quest, it's not too difficult to guess how his own band might sound, and yes, you're right Threshold, Devin Townsend, Dream Theater, Vanden Plas, Haken and early Queensrche all inevitably spring to mind, and this is by no means a bad thing (just in case you are wondering). It's also by no means just a copy of any of the aforementioned acts and it stands proudly as Morten's own unique musical vision.

Five years on from 'The Interpreter' and Morten is back with nine brand new slices of Progressive Metal excellence. The tracks that immediately grabbed me include the wondrous 'Lamentation' which could have come straight off Dream Theater's 'Falling Into Infinity' magnum opus, whilst 'Darkness Is Gathering' is another instant classic, a multi-layered epic number that highlights the light and shade of Morten's compositional skills.

Having the long-time Marillion desk wizard Rob Aubrey (see also Spock's Beard and Big Big Train) mix and master this album has been a very smart move as he knows exactly how to give Morten the depth, power and aural excellence this release so richly deserves. This is an immensely mature and thought-provoking album, one which stretches the listener both musically and intellectually. It's not an easy thing to balance, but Morten manages it with class and eloquent elegance.

Getting excited by Progressive Metal is not an easy thing for me to do because all too often these days it feels hackneyed and cliched, but on this occasion, Morten easily sidesteps any such pitfalls and has created something truly impressive well done Sir... well done indeed!
