Dan Patlansky / Mollie Marriott - Deaf Institute, Manchester (UK) - 15 March 2018

Blimey, it's a bit full for this early. Oh, Mollie Marriott's already on, let's see how she's developed since she was sweet at The Ruby Lounge supporting Bad Touch.. "this is our last song..." Oh... stage times were given, but the bands are actually working to thirty minutes before. So what can be gleaned? She is sweet again, her voice is powerful yet soulful and the band deliver with a minimum of fuss. She still looks a little tentative yet delighted to be here, but that Rock Star arrogance will come with experience, the punters buzz around the merch table getting their albums signed and things look good for Mollie Marriott.

Mollie Marriot Live 1

Dan Patlansky has got it going on. He even sports a look for the new album 'Perfection Kills', a three-piece light blue ensemble without the jacket and speaking to him recently he showed able understanding of the business and his appeal; he was doing something with the biz, it was not dictating to him. The sold-out crowd is testament to his constant touring and the last excellent release, a combination of Funky shudderers, classic Blues and raucous Rockers, it's a push on from 'Introvertigo' and his live show has progressed too.

There's not much space to parade around on the Deaf Institute performance area, he takes the stage right position and bosses it, tuning his own guitar and wandering on at the ungodly hour of 8.15. Firstly, the sound is rich, full and gives everyone a chance, secondly, Patlansky will not allow the live arena to do away with his dynamics, he starts, as he often does, with a Blues meander and then hammers straight into album opener 'Johnny'. He follows this with some patter that's so cheesy it could be ironic, and then it's into 'Never Long Enough', another new tune; ballsy to do that but the crowd are completely with him. As he bends over his guitar, feeling every note, wringing the music out and showing how much it feels, his band are having a great time too, bewhiskered Jonathan Murphy keeps it tight, but Patlansky allows perma-grinning keysman Tom Gatzka lots of time to beguile us and it really adds appeal, while drummer Felix Dehmel can't keep his eyes off Patlansky, even if he yawns as a slow Blues workout is announced.

Dan Patlansky Live 1

This is, to put it simply, pretty stunning; 'Dog Days' is enormous, 'Mayday' leans back beautifully and they finish with a workout of 'Backbite', allowing everyone to have a good go and Patlansky to start the feedback, take his guitar off, tap all over the frets and hold the guitar by one string, it's all in, a cacophony to finish, in the tradition of The Who perhaps, but with a more regimented style. Patlansky knows exactly what he wants to do and exactly how to get it – tonight he does just that.

This evening featured some great playing, sweet Soul and live flamboyance; Dan Patlansky is on his way to something big.
