Dogs Or Gods? I'd plump for the latter!

Sometimes bands slip under the music media radar only to re-appear years later and you wonder why they weren't noticed earlier. Formed around 2009 when they released their debut album 'Flying', Dogs Or Gods consists of Colin Wright (drums), Tom Nordon (guitar/vocals) and Tony Butler (bass/vocals). If Butler's name sounds familiar, that's because his previous outfit was Big Country!

'Eternal Empty Feeling' is a place where Classic Rock rules but there's a twist! Despite a standard sound filled with bluesy licks by Nordon, and a driven beat by the rhythm engine of Butler and Wright, there is a lack of screamed lyrics; instead, a smoother, mellower tone emanates from Butler as he delivers the meaningful lyrics. 'Fighting Talk' brings Nordon in on lead vocals, an altogether more brooding, dark and deep affair, as is the track itself, which is slower paced and menacing.

'Traveller' ramps up the Rock engine again as Nordon's slide guitar, Butler's bass and Wright's drums gel into a catchy old-school Rock song. Upping the heaviness stakes whilst adding more clever lyrics comes 'I Don't Give A Damn' where a catchy chorus ensures the track, sung by Butler, is a memorable one. 'Easy For You To Say' takes on a totally different vibe and sounds like it's related to David Bowie's 'Heroes' – and that's no bad thing! Still moving musical goalposts, 'Devil's Own' is a mature punky track with a fast-paced, striped-back sound and Nordon's low, mean vocal, only broken up by bottleneck slide guitar.

The pure Brit Pop/Rock of 'Greatest Yet' and 'Dream Of The Glory Days' have their roots in a time gone by and sound great. The anthemic ballad 'New Day' sits innocently amongst other tracks but it's a diamond, as are the cool and quirky 'Flashback Jimmy' and 'November Sky', with dialogue that reels you in and builds a story. The latter is bluesy, moody and infectious.

As their press release says, the band has crafted these tracks "as a mirror of over 170 years of collective life", and between them their musical experience is indeed vast, which is why they're confident about their direction and also why the album is self- produced.

This is true adult Rock with no gimmicks or over production. The lyrical content is imaginative, whilst keeping a strong grip on reality, and the musicianship, as you'd expect, is brilliant. Dogs Or Gods? I'd plump for the latter!
