After many years listening to this genre, I've become very picky and selective regarding what I listen to, but with this album Sleeping Romance have seduced me.

In September 2017, Italian band Sleeping Romance released their second album called 'Alba'. Arriving some four years after their debut 'Enlighten', this new record is rather different, the band now exploring an aggressive Metal aspect which clearly wasn't present previously.

Sleeping Romance, led by their vocalist Federica Lanna, alternate between slow Symphonic melodies and obscure oppressive parts; as a whole, this is somewhat similar in nature to that of fellow Symphonic Metallers Xandria. This all combines to make for an efficient recipe and this new release is an opus not to forget.

Despite the short 'Ouverture – Twilight' and 'Underture – Daylight' tracks that bookend the album – which I personally feel bring little added value – the overall content in between them is well worth your attention. 'Where The Light Is Bleeding' and 'My Temptation' clearly show up this interesting combination of lyrical voice, slow parts and aggressive riffs, while 'Across The Sea' is definitely the notable slow song of the album. It is also interesting to note how frequent it is to have a song of this nature on almost every single Symphonic Metal album.

The main ingredients for a successful Symphonic Metal release are contained within this new opus, but Sleeping Romance do not deal with only that, they also add something personal, a facet you often find smartly mixed within other albums from the most talented bands within this genre like Epica, Nightwish, Delain or the aforementioned Xandria.

Sleeping Romance clearly have a great deal of potential when it comes to the live environment. On their website, the fact they have already performed many times live can be clearly seen, as can the fact that will tour through Europe with Serenity and Visions Of Atlantis on the 'Symphonic Metal Nights' tour next year. It appears to be a fine event for both Symphonic and Power Metal fans alike!

After many years listening to this genre, I've become very picky and selective regarding what I listen to, but with this second album Sleeping Romance have seduced me and I'll be certain to keep a look out for whatever this Italian group are producing in the future.
