The Struts / The Second Sons - Koko, London (UK) - 19 June 2018

Opener The Second Sons are a band who very much wear their retro influences on their sleeves, largely The Rolling Stones for sure. I enjoy them, so do the crowd, and they have got the look no doubt. I just thought that some of their songs could have been more memorable.

The Struts Live 3

This was not the case with The Struts whose catalogue is full of instantly catchy anthems. They also possess the unforgettable Luke Spiller. In gold leather and tassels from the start, he tells any audience members not prepared to let themselves go to leave and if they are not sweating, they are not doing it right.

Certainly, he is a dazzling front-man, part Freddie Mercury, part Frankenfurter (Tim Curry) and part Michael Jackson, he appeals to man, woman and beast and all eyes remain on him every second he is on stage. However, he is not complacent and works hard to engage all the crowd right from the off. It's only when you see a front-man like Spiller you realise how complacent a lot of front-men are these days in both wardrobe and manner.

The Struts Live 2

Amongst the anthems they slip in a couple of new ones, but the energy does not dim. I wonder if the crowd would even notice if Spiller did not sing such is his transfixing power over an audience, but there is no doubt that they deliver musically as well. The crowd control did remind me a little of Pontins at one point, but the sweetness of inviting a girl onstage during 'Dancing In The Dark' won me over even on that score. Choosing to cover 'Rebel' by David Bowie made me reflect that Spiller has the potential to be a front-man of that stature. Totally getting away with a matador suit with gold pharaoh loincloth at the end, this was sheer rarefied star quality. Never boring, at the end I think all of the crowd, including me, would have done that again – superb!
