Sensational doesn't come close to describing this.

For the purpose of perspective, I think it's only appropriate that I declare I'm a massive fan of this band. For their latest effort, they've decided to take the ambitious route of writing, recording and releasing a double album, this being part one with the second instalment due later this year. To say this spectacular opening salvo has floored me is an enormous understatement.

Musically, there's a huge evolution in the group's sound including an increased melodic-ness and a wider variety of tempos and heaviness. The individual performances, from the guitars and the rhythm section to Kobra Paige's vocals, are on a completely different level to their previous efforts, with Jacob Hansen's production lifting everything into the stratosphere. I've long stated that Paige is the heir to Doro's Queen Of Heavy Metal crown and here she's excelled herself and firmly laid claim to that throne. Lyrically, this is one of those rare albums with virtually every song reaching in deep to emotions and feelings we've all experienced at some point.

From the thunderous opener 'Gotham' to the anthemic, punchy and catchy closer 'Prevail', every track on this behemoth is an absolute winner. There's also the pounding guitar and irresistible chorus of 'TriggerPulse', while 'You Don't Know' features a marching rhythm, bubbling riff and ringing lead guitar that flows into a powerful and infectious chorus. Elsewhere, you'll find the bouncing riff and rhythm of 'Manifest Destiny', the hard-hitting and crunchy 'Victim', the shred-tastic instrumental 'Check The Phyrg' and the furious riff-fuelled 'Hell On Earth'.

As immense as these are, constant replays confirm my two favourites. 'Specimen X (The Mortal Chamber)' is an utter beast with a quick fire riff and beat that powers towards an up-tempo, fist-punching, lyric-bellowing chorus that's one of the most contagious I've heard in years. In complete contrast, there's the beautiful, lyrically powerful and emotionally-charged ballad 'Light Me Up'. Music has an unquantifiable ability to deliver strength and inspiration during difficult times and '...Up' provides the brightest of lights for the darkest of places.

Last issue, I mentioned it would take something sensational to stop the album I was reviewing from being my top 2017 release; sensational doesn't come close to describing this. Not only do I confidently crown the stunning 'Prevail 1' as my Album Of 2017 but also confirm it's smashed its way in to my best-ever Top Five. All that remains is to wait and see if part two equally achieves the same status.
