When it's good, it's very good. The retro stuff is smooth and interesting, there's just not enough of it.

To my shame, 2018 is Death By Unga Bunga's tenth anniversary, and this is the first I've heard of them. 'So Far, So Good, So Cool' says it all really; it's the band's fifth album, and it truly feels like musicians who have found their groove, are relaxed, and just get on with it.

Okay, it might not be exactly what you think of when you say "Garage Rock". It has a very retro vibe, right from the commercial radio-friendly riff of 'Haunt Me'. The style is upbeat, with a major vibe and sometimes a couple of high notes slotted in. 'Soldier' and 'Cynical' have more of an Indie feel. The guitar is gently steeped in distortion, but flashes in with neat little licks whenever you might be missing it.

'So Cool' just did it for me in terms of laid-back seventies Rock, especially with this summery weather we've being having. The lyrics, like "fringes on your jacket", just got me carried away. It's smart, suave and weirdly moreish, despite the simplicity. 'Into The Night' is bass-driven with lots of Pop, and I'd go so far as to say groovy, with the guitar-fill just after the first verse being fantastically catchy and playful. There are electronic touches too, for anyone that likes their Rock with a bit of Techno. 'Turn My Brain Off' is similarly energetic, if a softer sort of Rock, with a touch of Blondie's 'Dreaming' about it.

'I'm No Provider' is a strange juxtaposition of lyrics with an ironic meanness to them, while the guitar strums in a pacey acoustic-set style. Closer 'Bye Bye' is the heaviest track on the album and is a marching blend of guitar and drums contrasted with a sparse verse, akin to My Chemical Romance's 'Teenagers'.
'So Far, So Good, So Cool' has me on the fence. The softer Indie tracks can be pretty vanilla with not enough variety within the tracks, but too much variety across the album. There's also a couple of strange (I want to say musical?) interludes in 'Internet' and 'Space Race'. On the other hand, when it's good, it's very good. The retro stuff is smooth and interesting, there's just not enough of it.
