Mostly Autumn - The Met, Bury (UK) - 03 November 2018

Scheduling conflicts meant I could not attend Mostly Autumn's annual visit to my hometown Citadel venue (St.Helens). The next best option proved to be The Met in Bury, where I last caught the band when Heather Findlay was still lead singer and also heavily pregnant. I don't think the turnout was as good as that I usually encounter at The Citadel, but the atmosphere and performance by MA was still something special.

This evening marked a year to the day since the passing of former rhythm guitarist Liam Davison and a projected photo montage accompanied by the theme from 'Last Of The Mohicans' was a moving tribute to someone lost so young. We were then treated by two sets split by a twenty minute break, covering the whole of the back catalogue. There are so many strong songs to choose from that favourites will always be omitted, though I was more than happy with tonight's choices.

Beginning with the lengthy (fifteen minutes) title track from last years 'Sight Of Day' album showcased the talents of everyone in the band, and the images on the backdrop were a nice touch that added to the enjoyment of the show. The line-up has remained constant for the last few years, with only drummer Alex Cromarty leaving earlier in 2018, to be replaced by Henry Rogers and this has resulted in the most consistent run of shows I can remember. The first set also includes the likes of 'Simple Ways', 'Evergreen', 'Silver Glass' and 'Silhouettes Of Stolen Ghosts'.

As ever the focus of my attention is generally in the direction of Olivia Sparnnen-Josh. Her vocals are spellbinding and the emotion packed 'Silhouettes...' is one of the first half highlights. The lengthy musical passages give everyone their moment in the spotlight and having three singers (including main-man Bryan Josh and second guitarist Chris Johnson) certainly enhances the vocal dynamics. The first set concludes with 'Questioning Eyes', and once more Olivia's performance is dripping with quality, alongside Iain Jennings great keyboard touches.

Following a welcome refreshment break the band return to the stage for part two. The second half begins with 'Tomorrow Dies', 'Drops Of The Sun' and 'Nowhere To Hide', with everyone again involved to the full. Keyboardist/flautist/backing vocalist Angela Gordon has an integral role in the MA sound and next to Iain brings great depth and scope to the music. An extended 'Mother Nature' allows Bryan to flex his solo muscles and this is followed by 'Changing Lives', with Chris again on lead vocals. 'Heroes Never Die' is one of earlier established trademark MA songs and this time offers a slightly different, more up-tempo arrangement than I am used to hearing. The set concludes with an impassioned version of 'Tonight' and things come to a close properly with the 'Forever And Beyond' encore, which is dedicated to Liam Davison.

With a new album ('White Rainbow') imminent it is great to know MA will be beginning 2019 in a healthy position. They may not have the profile they deserve, but it is clear from the live performances that a love for the music is what matters most. The band have a dedicated fan-base who are always guaranteed value for money alongside some sublime musical skills.
