The debut album from Dutch five piece 5bridgeS.

'The Thomas Tracks' would appear to be the debut album from Dutch five piece 5bridgeS. The band's web site ( - from where this album can be obtained) clearly states that the ethos of the band is to build a bridge between classic 70's progressive rock (in this case by classic think Genesis with touches of Yes) and the prog of today. With a few exceptions 5bridgeS live up to that pledge, with this collection of long, bordering on the verge of epic songs being strongly influenced by Gabriel era Genesis, with vocalist Piet Roelofsen actually sounding uncannily like the long departed Genesis frontman. Built on melodic themes that meander through some intricate passages, this album has the ability to sound both retro and current at the same time, although the structures themselves are undoubtedly from a bygone day. The keyboard work of Luke d'Araceno is constantly to the fore of everything that 5bridgeS do, and while he is more than ably assisted by Enzo Gallo on guitars, 'The Thomas Tracks' is a gloriously keys drenched album.

All of the ten songs on display have the same carefully crafted seventies vibe and for anyone who has a soft spot for that era, there is much here to get your teeth into, with the likes of 'Lovernius Song' being a dreamy mix of muted drums, atmospheric keyboard and beautifully poised guitar, while the more dramatic 'The Spell Of Eternity' is a wonderful opportunity for all five band members to stretch out and alter the pitch and attack of the song on a regular basis. D'Araceno once more drives the song through some quiet atmospheres, stringent angular attacks and frenetic barrages, however it is the beautiful solo from Gallo that steps forward to steal the show on this occasion. Bassist Martin Thoolan and drummer Rob van der Linden supply the needed punch and interplay to create the ever changes moods and themes, although sometimes the drums do sound a little cluttered.

The only warning that I would give for anyone with a penchant for Genesis inspired prog, would be to make sure not to judge this album without getting past opening track 'Didymus'. It starts off well enough, with a tinkling keyboard sound that sits the mood somewhere between RPWL and Dream Theater, before building through Pink Floydian guitar pangs. The drums then take an electronic twist and quite bizarrely a dance beat and parping keyboard have you running for cover. Interspersed throughout this are swaying string samples that sound as though they've been lifted from 'The Avengers' TV show theme music and some horribly thunking drum breaks, before sanity (and Genesis) returns! That one misguided moment apart 'The Thomas Tracks' is an album that anyone who is (still) waiting for Peter to return to his old band will revel in and visit on a regular basis.
