Shows a band who have improved as song-writers.

It's been a few years since Brit Rock Queens JOANovARC's well-received debut 'Ride Of Your Life' with the foursome getting their arses out to promote it as much as possible whilst developing this second, self-titled release. Another band that have gone in the PledgeMusic direction, JOANovARC raised two and a half times their target which shows they have managed to grow a sizeable and loyal fan base from the seed of that first album.

They come straight out of the gate with 'Burning' which is a solid opener that could maybe do with livening up a bit, although a nice guitar section helps in this respect. The song, catchy though it is, lacks a bit of "oomph" for an opener. However, 'Waiting For' addresses the issue straight away with a much jauntier base and more variety from vocalist Sam Walker. It's not too heavy and really jumps out at the listener.

One thing JOANovARC don't do is stick to a template, and they inject some nice variety throughout the release. 'Down By The River' is more laid-back but with a terrific refrain, whereas 'People Coming Up' adds a flavour of Funk to the mix and a "whoah, whoah, whoah" chorus that will no doubt go down a storm live. They also know how to write a catchy light rocker as evidenced by the likes of 'Take It Out', 'Try It On' and 'Jane', a track with a terrific melody but deadly serious lyrics. Walker is a great vocalist and the rest of the group are incredibly solid behind her which is not surprising considering they'd been together for several years before releasing the debut.

I'm happy to reveal that 'JOANovARC' is a nice progression from 'Ride Of Your Life' and it shows a band who have improved as song-writers, and that they are not afraid of a small risk or two if the track is a good one. The variety on the album gives it good longevity and the overall quality means JOANovARc are a group you will come back to and, if you've any sense, seek out live as well.
