Long overdue re-release of Sammy Hagar's classic live release.

This is a long overdue re-release of Sammy Hagar's classic live release 'Loud and Clear', so full marks for BGO Records. There is a nice booklet with reproduced photos from the original release, though sadly you cannot ever replicate the excitement of the original red vinyl! Along with Kiss' 'Alive 2' and Hawkwind's 'Live 79' I thought Sammy's live release had all the energy a live record should have, you know, almost like the feel of owning a great bootleg of a legendary show.

Only Sammy Hagar could get away with a song about his favourite colour 'Red' and make it rock……"Hey green ain' t mean compared to red"! But that's the beauty of it you really just get caught up in the moment listening to this. The real let down is only having 8 songs on offer and it would have made this release extra special with some bonus tracks included. Still, with high energy classics like 'Rock And Roll Weekend' and 'I've Done Everything For You' on offer, and Sammy's potent vocal and guitar work, you can forgive any shortfalls in content.

Listening to the release now I can hear a strong influence of the Who, especially in the Roger Daltrey screams, not to mention a lot of the classic rock structures from his time fronting Montrose. On the subject of Montrose two classics from the legendary debut album 'Bad Motor Scooter' and 'Space Station Number Five' are delivered with scorching confidence. Just check out Sammy and Gary Phil taking one another on in a guitar battle that just begs for you to reach for your imaginary guitar or tennis racket.

A highlight for me was the sensitive rendition of Donovan's 'Young Girl Blues' a song that drips with the atmosphere of a live show. Sammy in my opinion was always an underrated guitarist and vocalist and it was not until his stint in Van Halen that he received any real acclaim. Let's also not forget the killer band Sammy had backing him around this time, both Chuck Ruff and the legendary Denny Carmassi, and Bill Church from his Montrose days provide a rock solid foundation for Sammy to rock your socks off.

If like me you adored this record when it first came out then take a trip down memory lane, or if this is going to be your introduction to the red rocker then you can find no finer start…enjoy!
