One to keep your eye on.

When the Italian progressive metal band Moonlight Comedy called it a day their guitarist Simone Fiorletta had a vision/idea to record a new album with a slight difference from the usual band formula. His idea being that he would ask some of the best singers in prog metal today to sing on his album. With each of the tracks specifically tailored to the singers talents, Fiorletta would himself write all the music but the singers would then be able to write their own lyrics and vocal melodies for each of the songs that they were given. So what could have ended up as a bit of a hit and miss affair - you know, when the songs on this kind of project don't live up to the reputations of the people who perform on the album - has instead fast become a favourite of mine, with each singer wringing the most that he can from the respective tracks he sings on.

And what a group of singers Mr Fiorletta has brought together for this album, Michelle Luppi (ex Vision Divine, solo), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire), Mark Basile (DGM), Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth) and my personal fave, Andy Kuntz of Vanden Plas. At first though with this amount of talent on show, as I played the album I kept half expecting to hear a bit of a disjointed mess, thankfully Simone Fiorletta never lets this happen and the performances of the band and especially the guitar work of Fiorletta himself, only help to make the vocal performances even better than they already are.

Some of the standout moments on the album are for me 'Can't Dream Anymore' featuring the always great Andy Kuntz, whose wonderful voice lifts this song into the something special category, 'The Killer' and 'I'm Bleeding', which have Michelle Luppi on vocals and his very melodic delivery suits these two tracks to a tee, and 'Nowadays' that has Mark Basile on vocals and is a track filled with some superb guitar and keyboard interplay.

What I think also makes 'No Gravity' a bit special is the fact that the music of Simone Fiorletta has it's own identity, he doesn't just try to clone the sound and style of the bands the singers come from, and because of this his music has more of a band feel to it than on most of these project type of releases. I hope that Mr Fiorletta carries on with No Gravity (a tour with the singers would be good) and makes this into a full time band, one to keep your eye on.
