Title

A diverse mixture of contemporary progressive metal, electronica and punk.

Formed in 2006, female fronted Clandestine are creating some serious waves in their native Los Angeles, winning the title of 'Best Female Fronted Band' from Rock City News magazine after the release of their self-titled EP. Offering a diverse mixture of contemporary progressive metal, electronica and punk, debut album 'The Invalid' is set to boost the band into the major league, mixed by Sylvia Massey (Tool, System Of A Down.) I will readily admit that this type of music is not something I normally find comfortable listening at all, in fact I find it about as comfortable as falling down the stairs, but there is something quite compelling about Clandestine's amalgamation of the likes of Evanescence, Dream Theater, Tool, Rush, Linkin Park and Lacuna Coil that makes me want to listen more, and listening more is what you need to do with this album as it is not an instant fix, but infinitely more rewarding with each outing.

The powerful yet soft vocals of June Park are at the forefront, she effortlessly flits between angelic and guttural in the blink of an eye, and guitarist Dan Durakovich provides the dynamics with his grinding riffs and the occasional tasteful solo. The opener 'Fearless' sets the scene perfectly with it's pounding bass-line and progressive electronica keyboard parts, but is rich in melody, and 'Disappear In You' features a nu-metal style riff and Dream Theater style keyboard solo, and while there is the occasional death metal grunt from Ms. Park, it's counteracted by a powerful soaring chorus. Third track 'Silent Sin' eases back on the progressive flourishes with an uncluttered sound and softer vocal delivery, and is potentially a huge breakthrough hit. 'Philistine' is crushingly heavy with thrash tendencies, then 'Pretend' is part-ballad, part contemporary rock, with a keyboard sound that hints at the art-rock of Japan, and a guitar solo that Rush's Alex Lifeson would approve of. 'Fracture' and 'Dead To The World' drift back to the progressive metal sound, then 'Phantom Pain' is a meandering ballad that builds to a big finish, with some bluesy guitar work from Dan Durakovich, and perfectly showcases the vocal range of June Park. The title track 'The Invalid' is probably the most extreme vocal-wise with an abundance of growls and screams, then album closer 'Comatose' is carried along on a Mike Oldfield style piano melody, and hints at eighties style Rush.

It's hard to pigeon-hole Clandestine due to the diversity of the material on offer, they have created a unique sound that needs time to get used to, but it's well worth the effort. It won't appeal to fans of AOR or Melodic Rock, but if you have an interest in the heavier end of the spectrum, then this delivers in spades.
