You will find plenty to enjoy on this album.

There's definitely something in the water in Lake Michigan, with anything half decent in the modern rock genre invariably coming from a Canadian band. Add to that long list Vancouver band 'The Art of Dying'. After winning the Vancouver Fox Seeds competition (previous winners include Nickelback, Faber Drive and Matthew Good) in 2005 'The Art of Dying released the independent self-titled debut in 2006 and the resulting single 'Get Through This'.

Five of those songs have been reworked and re-recorded for this their major label debut ('Get Thru This', 'I Will Be There', 'You Don't Know Me', 'Inside It's Raining' - now simply 'Raining' - and 'Completely'). Signed to Reprise via the imprint label Intoxication, the label set up by Disturbed's David Draiman and Dan Donegan, they now have everything in their favour in order to achieve success. Major label involvement has now meant that the band has been able to attract a major league producer in Howard Benson and as a result the older material has had new life breathed into it.

Opener and debut single the metallic alt rock of 'Die Trying' features Seether's Shawn Morgan on vocals, the epic ballad 'Sorry' has echoes of Nickelback vocally, perhaps The Veer Union melody-wise, and 'Raining' bears more than a passing resemblance to the now defunct cult Canuck legends Closure. Although there is a tendency for this genre to sound similar, particularly when produced by Benson, and ultimately influences sometimes read like a role call for every modern rock band out there past and present, it's the quality of the material that counts. The tuneful 'Completely', the crunching 'Straight Across My Mind' and the schmoozing ballad 'Breathe Again' are superb songs in their own right, avoiding accusations of plagiarism that would most certainly be levelled at less talented modern rock bands of this ilk. No doubt if your tastes extend to the end of the rock spectrum occupied by bands such as Nickelback, The Veer Union or Closure then you will find plenty to enjoy on this album. What are you waiting for?
