A Westcoast styled release from Avenue Of Allies.

This is the second Westcoast styled release from Avenue Of Allies Archives series. The 'George' in question is multi-instrumentalist and singer George (Jerzy) Grunwald. George was born in Poland, raised in Sweden, and also spent some of his teen years living in New York. He was taught to play piano at an early age by his father, a classical pianist, and then picked up a guitar and wrote his first song at the age of 16. Now based in Sweden full-time, he worked as a song-writer and session musician for other artists, and the songs for this album were written during that period of time. It was originally released in some Asian territories in 2006, but this is the first time it has been available worldwide.

Out of the five A of A westcoast releases this month, this is the one that has had the least effect on me, the material is just a little too smooth and laid-back for me, with some subtle jazz influences and plenty of touches of saxophone. But that's not to say it's a bad album at all, the songs are very well crafted and played, and it has a crisp production. There is also a large list of backing vocalists, such as Joseph Williams (Toto), Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff and Lou Pardini (Chicago), and David Foster (Airplay). There's a light summery feel to the album, and leans in style towards some of George's influences, with the American Rock feel of Toto, Steely Dan and The Eagles rubbing shoulders with the likes of the softer Chicago, Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross. The title track, 'You Know', and 'Have I Lost My Girl' are the up-tempo numbers with catchy choruses, and 'Touch The Sun' has a big Toto influence. There are also plenty of gentle ballads like 'With Every Breath', 'Mystery Girl', and 'A Love So Right.' It's tracks like the reggae-tinged 'Don't Give It Up' and the Jazzy sax-heavy 'Save My Love' that don't appeal to my tastes, but that's just a personal opinion.

There are two bonus tracks that weren't on the original release, 'Why Don't You Stay' is a smooth ballad that again reminds me a little of Toto, and there's also an instrumental version of 'Save My Love.' It probably won't be of much interest to those of you who prefer the heavier end of the spectrum, but if appreciate the lighter side of the tastes catered for in Fireworks and on Rocktopia, and you're looking for the perfect accompaniment to a lazy Summer evening, then this could be right up your street.
