Lars Eric Mattsson is back with a brand new album.

Lion Music head honcho Lars Eric Mattsson is back with a brand new album, though this one is slightly different from his usual work. Lars this time around has made a fully instrumental album (not that unusual for him, you will agree) that he describes as a combination of a film soundtrack mixed with electric guitar and an orchestra, rather than a straight ahead rock release. This combination, after quite a few listens, is a very enjoyable, yet at times perplexing experience, with the lead guitar work of Mattsson being both the focal point of the album and it's standout moments as well.

On this album Lars doesn't just shred, he works his guitar solos into the songs so well that they don't need to be ridiculously fast, take your face off, thousand notes a second, over the top wank fests. Instead Lars makes sure that on each of the tracks his guitar work fits into all the right places, and that the guitar solos never overshadow the songs. 'Bounce' is a prime example of this philosophy, as the title suggests it jumps along at a fair old clip, with flutes, violins, and harpsichord joined to a really catchy lead guitar riff, that sets the foot a tapping as soon as it begins to play. Other cuts to listen out for are the strangely arranged 'The Heart', where Lars' guitar has an otherworldly discordant tone that reminded me of Uli Jon Roth at times, the symphonic rocker 'Eternal Cycles' and the eight minute 'Midnight Sun', where Lars really seems to be having a ball as he solos and riffs his way through the song.

I fell out big time with guitar instrumental albums a few years back because there were too many of them coming out, and most of them were by people just showing how fast they could play with no regard for the music itself. Lars Eric Mattsson with 'Arora Borealis' has somewhat restored my faith in this type of release, and if you want to try an album that has a lot in common with the work of Uli Jon Roth and is not your usual shred fest, but rather a cleverly arranged and played set of musical passages, then this could be right up your street.
