Title

Ninth studio album from Ginger and company.

The Wildhearts are probably the most criminally underrated band in British rock, a band that deserves far more acclaim and commercial success than what has greeted them so far. But then again, they wouldn’t be The Wildhearts as we know and like if they had a number one album under their belts in the 2000s. They are a rare breed: their music is deceptively heavy and very metal in parts but they’re also a contemporary rock band with hugely catchy melodies. They’ve split up more times than you can count on one hand and have had far too many line-up changes, but mainman Ginger has kept the flame burning for almost twenty years.

Recorded in Denmark with producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, The Storm and The Bronx et al) the oddly titled ‘Chutzpah!’ has some killer tunes like the toe-tapping, head banging ‘John Of Violence’ which will probably be a live classic standing alongside the likes of ‘Vanilla Radio’, ‘TV Tan’ and ‘Caffeine Bomb.’ Like Cheap Trick, the melodies are what are important here and ‘Chutzpah!’ has its fair share of standout melodies and beefy choruses. ‘You Are Proof That Not All Women Are Insane’ is not only brilliantly titled but also a lot of fun. ‘Tim Smith’ is perhaps the heaviest track on the album: the riff is an absolute monster! The short piano intro to ‘Low Energy Vortex’ is beautifully composed. The lead vocals are shared by bassist Scott Sorry and guitarist C.J. on some tracks which gives Ginger a break. Ritch Battersby pounds the hell out of his drumkit throughout most of the 10 tracks.

The production is a bit fuzzy and the electro/dance beats that are sporadically laid out through some tracks lets the album down a little but on the whole this is another top Wildhearts album.
