Fireworks Magazine Online 47 - Enbound

ENBOUND

Enbound dates back to late 2006 and is the brainchild of former Zonata member Mike Cameron Force. The band was originally started with guitarist Jonathon Nyberg who left the group due to family commitments. Singer Marcus Nygren was also part of the original line up but decided to leave to follow a different musical path. Both Marcus and Jonathon were involved in the four track demo released in 2008, but neither took any part in the full debut. The album and current Enbound line up consists of Force (drums), Lars ‘Lee Hunter’ Safsund (vocals), Swedish teenage prodigy Marvin ‘The Butcher’ Flowberg (guitar) and Sven ‘Swede’ Oden (bass). Enbound released their debut album ‘And She Says Gold’ on 29th April 2011 on Inner Wound Recordings. Dave Scott caught up with the band the week of the release of the album for a chat.

You’re a new band just releasing your debut which has an astonishing variety of different sounds to it. For a new comer, how would you describe your style to them?

Normally I don’t think you will find this kind of “wide styled” music, that we want to play. Music is like mood swings or life itself and should come with surprises and be fun and sad. We play stuff between the sweetest piano ballad to thrash but of course we don’t say that we play thrash because this would upset a lot of people, hahaha! I’d like to say that we play melodic metal/hard rock as our main style but we definitely don’t want to categorize us too hard, a good song still is a good song no matter genre.

It is quite clear from your album that you have a vast array of different influences between you. Are there one or two specific bands that you modelled your sound and direction on?

We had some directions when the band was new that we wanted to have the positive energy from the German band Rage. We wanted a more high pitch vocal and more melodies. We ended up pretty far from Rage but we are very pleased what we achieved. In the end we had to do what was best for Enbound rather than try to sound as others.

How did you arrive at the name of Enbound, and does it refer to anything specific?

We had a different name at first that we needed to change so one day when we were at MAX which is the favorite hamburger restaurant. We said that we need to come up with a new name before leaving dinner. We almost right away did come up with the name which we see as the new Yin & Yang, haha. It’s a mix of bound and unbound, like a wheel of no end but still maybe, or not? Or? We also have the O in our logo that is cracked so it’s not bound but also not unbound, so it have to be ENBOUND.

Your debut is out on April 29th entitled ‘And She Says Gold’. How did the album title come about?

Actually it was meant to be something different than usual metal band titles. I asked the guys if they agreed with me and they did. I’ve had this title on my mind for a time. Something that is a bit tasteful and beautiful. We think it’s a great title and wouldn’t have it otherwise. The line “and she says gold” also ended up in the song ‘Untitled X’ where Lee shows one of his best sides, haha.

If there was a compilation of new bands released, which track from your debut would you choose to showcase Enbound?

This is really hard for us since we think you have to listen to the whole record to get the experience we want to deliver. But we have recorded a video of the song ‘Combined The Souls’ because it is kind of the main music we do. So we would probably pick that song but it’s sad to just cut the tail of a whole living creature. Hmmm, bad example, I’m a vegetarian...

You set out to make the perfect album; did you achieve this in your opinion as a band? If not, what would you change?

Haha, did we? I didn’t know, hahaha. I believe we have done everything we could to get this result. Of course we could have more expensive equipment and so... but hey, we worked almost 2 years on this production. So if we weren’t happy about the result I think we would have burned down our studios and moved someplace warm...like hell.

You featured LaGaylia Frazier on the ballad ‘Frozen To Be’. How did you come to choose her for the track?

We saw her on a trailer on television and when she sang it blew us away, she’s got an amazing voice! So we contacted her manager and later we sent her some songs and she liked “Frozen to be” the better. At this time Lee wasn’t onboard the ship so it was a funny coincidence when he joined the band that they actually knew each other. Both had sung in the Eurovision Song Contest in Romania the same year.
So we talked how we should do this song and we finally came up that it should be a classic duet. So we met up in Stockholm and recorded the song there. And the song is about freezing moments in life, when life treats you well and this was also one of those moments. She is amazing as singer and person. A matter of fact she is calling right now, and this is not a joke!

As a band, which any one individual artist would you record/duet with if you had the chance on the next album?

Oh tricky question, I can’t reveal our future secrets. We asked Russell Allen once or twice...okay, three times, to sing on ‘And She Says Gold’ but we got stopped by his manager each time. But you have to try until you succeed!

You lost guitarist Jonathan Nyberg and singer Marcus Nygren due to personal reasons before the album started. How did you find such talents in Marvin Flowberg and Lars ‘Lee Hunter’ Safsund?

I knew Marvin from where we grew up and also knew he is a great guitar player. I gave him a call and asked if he would like to play in Enbound and he said, of course! He was 17 when he joined the band and even though he hasn’t so much life experience like us old hags, and all what that might mean and not, but damn he can shred. I found Lee on MySpace, heard the potential right away. He hasn’t sung metal before but he can scream the hell out of us! I sent him a song and got it back one hour later with a message: this was fun :) I was amazed of his voice and ability to do whatever he wanted with it. We met up a few weeks later, the whole band and just, “Okay let’s do this!”

Did their additions change the direction or sound from what you originally envisaged/planned?

Yes, a bit, but only to the better. We do the stuff we want, and we are skilled enough to play the music we love. Now we see us as a solid band. Every member is worth gold for the band. We have so different backgrounds and influences but we combine our souls to Enbound.

When composing new tracks, does the music or lyrics come first?

Always music, the lyrics comes up later but we need to know what the music alone is saying, before we write lyrics, that have been the case so far. Sometimes a few lines from a demo end up on the final recording but we have never written lyrics before the music.

Are different band members responsible for each song or is it a total group effort?

Even though not everybody has written the first parts we all share some cred because we value each other. When you record something you have to add something of your own to trademark the sound. So everyone in the band contribute to have the Enbound sound.

Do you have any plans to tour later this year to promote the new album?

No we don’t unfortunately. We really want to play live though and if we won’t be on the road for this album, it will be for the next one. The final decision isn’t made, so stay alert.

Do we have any chance of seeing you on tour either as headliners or openers in the UK this year?

Difficult to answer, also regarding the last question. We would love to come and play for you guys! If it will happen, time will tell.

If as a support act, who would be your ideal choice as headliner to tour with?

Oh of course I can only answer for myself. I would like to open for Metallica, that would be a dream coming true. But if Ulrich is busy I guess it really doesn’t matter what band it is... hahaha. I’m thinking out loud here. Do you want to open for the bands you really like? It’s like driving a moped with a Harley gang, hahaha!

Away from the group, do you spend much time together personally?

Over the phone, Email or Facebook yes. We don’t live in the same city so we have to keep in touch mostly over phone. It’s always much nicer to hear a voice than read a text. But hey, add us on Facebook! I live between Lee (225km) and Swede (225km) and Marvin is 100km away from me so we don’t met up to present a new cool riff. But when we travel we usually hook up to get something to eat and chat.

Which music/acts do you all like to listen away from Enbound?

Queen, Dream Theater, Symphony X and Metallica I guess. There are not that many we all listen to. We’re all too not alike on this question.

So what next for Enbound once all the promoting and work on the debut is complete?

We already have made songs for the follow up, so we will check that and write new stuff for you.
