Italian band delivering American style 80's rock.

‘See The Thunder’ from Italian hard rockers Markonee is the latest in a long line of quality releases from Escape Records, and one of the biggest compliments I can give the band is that I would never have guess they were from Italy, as this album represents quite a successful fusion of American 80’s melodic hard rock with their European counterparts.

The band’s debut was released three years ago and was a concept album based around the invention of the radio by Gugliemo Marconi, hence the moniker, if in a somewhat anti-lawsuit friendly form. For the follow up, the band have roped in famed producer Beau Hill, and raised the bar significantly with the hard hitting sound and infectious, upbeat songs.

`The press release states Winger, Ratt, Warrant and Gotthard as comparisons, but I don’t really hear any of those. Opening track ‘Way 2 Go’ reminds me of Shotgun Symphony, Gabriele Gozzi’s blissfully accent-free vocals being very reminiscent of Tracy White. The title track ‘See the Thunder’ reminds me of CITA, back when that band were firing on all cylinders, ‘The Cross Between the Lines’ channels ‘Neon Knights’ on the verses, whereas ‘The Big K’ sound like, of all things, Witness, Gozzi even reminding of the wonderful Debbie Davis at times. So put all those bands together and I think you can get some sort of mental idea of where Markonee are coming from.

My only negative comment would be that the album is a bit of a Jordan affair - in that it’s definitely front-loaded, with the last 4 tracks not quite reaching the same standard. However, having said that, I have heard enough on this album to know that Markonee have an immense amount of potential, and are possibly the best Italian melodic rock band I’ve heard. Certainly worth checking out.
