New album from the self funded progressive death metal outfit.

You have to admire Enochian Theory. They are a band that has backed their own ability and taken their career into their own hands by forming a label, financing the recording of albums and EPs, doing their own promotion, concert bookings etc. and seem to be making progress without the support of a major label. Indeed, their web site suggests that they actually spurned the approaches of a number of well know labels who came to the table as a result of hearing the band’s debut album, (“A Monument to the Death of an Idea”) back in 2007, so that they could maintain the independence and freedom that was so important to them.

The band inhabits an area of the Prog Rock genre that’s part Porcupine Tree, part Dream Theater, with a slice of Death Metal in the mix. It’s the last one of the three that doesn’t do it for me and detracts from a generally fine collection of songs; although I freely acknowledge that this is very much a question of personal taste and that there are plenty of people out there who like the sort of growling, demonic vocals that punctuate proceedings from time to time.

Musically, the band is a very tight unit and has a good ear for both song construction and melody, which means that things remain interesting throughout. The guitar riffs are generally very tasty and the limited use of orchestration is extremely well done.

Aside from the Death Metal vocals that Ben Harris-Hayes uses, I have to say that his usual style is not to my taste and at times sounds incredibly thin. He has a pronounced vibrato (make that warble) that is extremely distracting and to my ears, annoying. Also he sounds out of tune, or maybe he’s on a different song to the rest of the band. It was only after I had formed these opinions that I noticed he’s listed in the credits as ‘Throat & Guitars’, which just about sums it up.

I can’t help thinking this would have been a really good album had the vocal performance matched the quality of the music.
