A debut album of great promise.

Seemingly home to all the world's great metal at the moment, Sweden is the musical place to be and the country's latest export is Fullforce. Originally formed in 2008 by ex-Hammerfall guitarist and bassist Stefan Elmgren and Magnus Rosén and Cloudscape's frontman Mike Andersson, it's taken a while to get a final line-up together but with ex-Narnia guitarist CJ Grimmark and Hammerfall drummer Anders Johansson finally on board the band were in business by early the following year, although one more recruit was necessary when Rosén left in 2010 to be replaced by ex-Heed bassist Tommy Larsson. Last summer saw them in the studio – well, a variety of studios – and 'One' is the result of their efforts.

The best point of reference for Fullforce would be a heavier version of Andersson's day job band Cloudscape. Their songs are both very accessible and highly memorable, but retain a thick, heavy edge thanks to the twin guitars of Elmgren and Grimmark. The bottom end works hard and pushes the material along (check out the driving beat to 'Rain') and keyboards (shared between the guitarists and Andersson) are used sparingly (and so to great effect) to add to the soundscape rather than flood it with orchestration. And, of course, over the top of some of the most exciting songs you might hear this year comes the voice of Andersson, one of the all-time great metal singers and a man who's yet to get the recognition he deserves.

There's a lot to commend within the album's eleven tracks, but highlights include 'Oblivion', where things all come together beautifully in the song's Eastern rhythms; the aforementioned 'Rain' takes some beating too (and check out Andersson's unintentional Coverdale homage at the end); but the showcase songs to my mind are 'Suffering In Silence', a short, exquisite composition with a corking solo and lead and harmony vocals to die for (who says you can't do it all in just three minutes!) and the heavier, piano-led 'Father Spirit' which when it gears up truly thunders along .

Equal parts progressive and melodic, Fullforce's material covers so many bases it's bound to appeal to a wide range of fans across the metal spectrum. With its lovely, punchy sound, as well as some pretty stunning artwork, 'One' is a debut album of great promise and with a bit of luck and some high profile shows it should be a prominent feature of a number of fans' and critics' 2011 Top Ten album lists come the end of the year. Trust me on this.
