A very authentic recreation of what our hero sounded like back in his gore-strewn heyday.

Much like pop diva Madonna, the original shock rocker himself (that’s Alice Cooper to you an’ me guv) has somehow always managed to stay one step ahead of the game through a combination of remarkably astute judgements, and knowing just when the time is right to move on to pastures new – work out what the audience wants, give it to ‘em big style before anyone else really cottons on, then jump ship just when it’s starting to get on the tired side of passé.

A simple enough philosophy but damn near impossible to pull off for any length of time...unless of course your name’s Alice Cooper. Granted, this post-millennium version isn’t perhaps quite setting the pace like the original Alice Cooper Band did back in the early 70’s, but he sure as hell must be doing something right because there ain’t many acts who can still put bums on seats in significant quantities after more than 40 years in the business.

Trumpeted by the record company as the much vaunted (and long overdue) sequel to 1975’s seminal ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’ opus, the astutely titled ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’ continues the trend established with the last couple of Alice Cooper offerings (i.e. it’s an unashamed retro trip back to the very heart of the 70’s shock/glam scene), only perhaps this time even more so. Expertly produced (just like the original) by the legendary Bob Ezrin, this album features contributions from quite an impressive list of writers and players such as Desmond Child and Kesha (who duets brilliantly with Alice on ‘What Baby Wants’), as well as some of the guys from the original Alice Cooper Band (Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith).

Moving on to the songs themselves – which vary from great (the acerbic classic Stones feel of ‘I’ll Bite Your Face Off’ for example or the schizoid ‘Ghouls Gone Wild’) to vaudeville pastiche (the synth laden ‘Disco Bloodbath Boogie Fever’ springs to mind) – all authentically recapture the desired mood created on the original back in the day, whilst the lyrics once again offer a fascinating, oft macabre glimpse into the wonderfully tortured mind of Alice Cooper. That said, what was shocking in the 70’s, isn’t necessarily so in this post 9/11 world. Thirty five years ago this might have had the likes of Mary Whitehouse screaming for blood, but now it’s more 70’s glam rock/Rocky Horror show/proto punk cabaret than anything else, albeit for the most part an amusingly enjoyable trip down memory lane.

Does this therefore emulate Alice Cooper at his outlandish best? Probably not ... as I said earlier; it is a bit patchy in places and there are a certainly a couple of fillers that I could quite happily live without. However, it’s a very authentic recreation of what our hero sounded like back in his gore-strewn heyday, so on that score mission accomplished I guess ... bet the forthcoming live shows will be something to witness though, as I’m sure many of these songs will take on a twisted new persona on stage.
