An unexpected treat.

Kruk? Never heard of them? Neither had I until this promo dropped through the letter box. However, I’m glad they have crossed my path because this, their sophomore release is a very fine album indeed, which will have those with a penchant for Melodic Hard Rock infused with a retro feel jumping with joy. There may not be anything new about what Kruk do but they have that certain ingredient that elevates them above the norm and makes them more than just a band trying to ride the coattails of a bygone era.

How can one not like an album where the wonderful tone of the ubiquitous Hammond Organ underpins a collection of high quality songs and where the riffs are chunky and the guitar solos melodic and meaningful rather than just showing off? At various times I was reminded of Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and to a lesser extend Rainbow and Presto Ballet: all of whom have/had the knack of writing great, melodic, songs with strong hooks and choruses; a trait Kruk also have in abundance.

The band comprises Piotr Brzychcy (guitars), Krzysztof Walczyk (keyboards), Tomasz Wiśniewski (vocals), Darek Nawara (drums) and Krzysztof Nowak (bass) all of whom contribute significantly to the overall sound. To reinforce the Deep Purple/Rainbow comparison vocalist Doogie White makes a guest appearance dueting with Wiśniewski on ‘In Reverie’, which is a highlight amongst an extremely strong set of songs. That’s not to say that Wiśniewski requires any help in the vocal stakes, because he’s very accomplished and despite his heritage doesn’t have a distracting Polish accent. Other standout songs are the stomping ‘Embrace Your Silence’ and the epic title track, which shows the band can do Prog as well.

This release comes with a bonus DVD, which shows the band are also a consummate unit in the live arena. Over the hour and a half they play their own material and unsurprisingly some Deep Purple covers, more than doing justice to both, and do you know what?I think I prefer the vocals to those of Ian Gillan!

There’s nothing better than receiving an unsolicited promo that turns out to be an unexpected treat and this certainly fits into that category.
