Once you get over the sheer absurdity of it all you can't help but enjoy it.

Before you read this review I must point out that no, I haven't took leave of my senses, not at all. But I do quite like some of this CD. When I first downloaded the album and listened to it my initial reaction was "what the hell?" But the further I listened the more I began enjoying it, and it managed to put a huge, cheesy grin on my face, which ultimately is what it's all about, isn't it?

The content of this CD, as the title cunningly suggests, is a collection of Swedish hit singles originally recorded by Abba, Roxette and Ace Of Base, all delivered in a Metal style, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The protagonist behind the album is young Swedish guitarist Tommy ReinXeed, already a successful artist with his bands Golden Resurrection and ReinXeed in Japan, which is possibly the main market for this release? The project was initiated when Christian Liljegren of Divinefire and Narnia (and manager of the Doolittle label) stumbled across one of Tommy's interpretations of Abba on YouTube and gave the go-ahead to do a whole album in the same vein.

It's the Abba songs that work the best in the Metal style; whatever your opinions may be of Sweden's biggest musical export, you can't deny that Bjorn and Benny knew how to produce a well-crafted pop song, and Tommy has explored the full extent of the musical arrangements and embellished them with multi-layered guitars and copious amounts of double-kick drums. I never really liked 'Money, Money, Money', but in this setting it sounds great, substituting the original piano parts for searing guitar runs. Likewise 'Super Trouper', 'Mamma Mia', 'Summer Night City' and 'Lay All Your Love On Me' benefit from the up-tempo Metal treatment. There's even a spirited run-through of 'Intermezzo No.1', the instrumental from Abba's 1975 self-titled release. (Look, I was bought up listening to Abba so I know my stuff, okay?) The Ace Of Base tracks are definitely the albums weakest points, but the Roxette tracks are okay; 'Beautiful Life' isn't great, but 'The Look' and 'Joyride' are suitably beefed-up, while 'Sleeping In My Car' is given the full-on rampaging Dragonforce-style treatment. Some may say that including the ballads 'Winner Takes It All' and 'Listen To Your Heart' is a sacrilegious step too far, but they are treated with more respect, reining in the Metal attack somewhat, and delivered closer to their original style.

Tommy Reinxeed has put together a great band to perform this music, and while at times his voice veers off into Justin Hawkins territory, his excellent guitar work more than makes up for it. It's certainly an album that will divide opinions, and probably shouldn't be taken too seriously. Although at times it is totally bonkers, once you get over the sheer absurdity of it all you can't help but enjoy it.
