This is just brilliant.

Stan Bush should be no stranger to any self respecting fan of melodic rock music. Blessed with a smokey voice of pure class and a gift to write uplifting, catchy, hook laden rockers, his work has graced many a film soundtrack including the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme's 'Bloodsport' and 'Kickboxer' along with, most famously, the original animated movie of Transformers. That was where I first heard Stan, as a young boy, who absolutely loved that film.. I remember enjoying the music immensely, most notably the spectacular feelgood track 'Dare' and the anthemic 'The Touch'. As I grew up, I bought the Tranformers soundtrack for nostalgia purposes and, armed with a newly formed appreciation for rock music, was blown away by Stan's contributions. I started buying his albums and never looked back.

With that in mind, I've actually had this album for years. I always rated it, but I must confess to leaving it on the shelf in favour of Stan's most recent album 'Dream The Dream' or his classy 'Language Of The Heart' release if I needed a Stan fix. Upon receiving the gorgeous Rock Candy remaster, I have to say it's enamoured me with this record all over again.

Stan's first solo effort way back in 1983, this album is not quite as anthemic as his later work, it's more in the vein of early Huey Lewis And The News, but it's top drawer nonetheless. Opener 'It's Hot' is a little bit trite and dated, yet still immensely likeable as far as I'm concerned. The album only improves as the powerful 'Fire In My Heart' and touching 'Can't Live Without Love' are both strong songs. The bar is raised higher still by 'Don't Accuse Her', a brilliant romp with some crunching guitars and first class vocals. There's a terrific version of 'All American Boy', a great Van Stephenson penned song which Y&T also cut, leading to many arguments between my brother and I about which was the better version (and I'll say it right here in print, it's Stan's). Also of note is the power ballad 'Time Isn't Changing You', the superb bouncy 'Round And Round' and the pounding closer 'Keep Your Love Alive'.

Stan's voice sounds just as good on this, his first album, as his latest, and as with all Rock Candy releases, it boasts a lavish booklet detailing the record and a fabulous remastered sound. His exceptional 1987 album with Barrage was due out at the same time, but Rock Candy hit some licensing problems. Keep your eyes open for that, but this will tide you over just fine for now. Considering I already had this album and knew it well, it had been some time since I last played it and while I had it blasting out, I must admit I thought to myself halfway through 'This is just brilliant'. I can't really sell it to you any better than that. Excellent!
