Sheffield City Hall - 29th October

A problem. Unwell, two shows to see in one week, and not enough energy to see both. Don’t you just hate getting old? Out of the two though, I decided that Alice was the one I would see as the likelihood was that I would catch the other band in the near future, and the fact that every time I come out to see Alice the show is different in some way.

This tour was called ‘Alice Cooper’s Night Of Fear,’ which over the years has become a little tongue in cheek, but you can’t take anything away from the master because what he does, he does extremely well. Entering the stage on his movable staircase, Alice raised his arms to show us his ‘Black Widow’ get up, before coming down to stage level and hitting us with some really classic stuff. ‘Eighteen,’ ‘Under My Wheels,’ ‘Billion Dollar Babies,’ ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’ and ‘Is It My Body’ all sounded excellent, and very true to the original. But special mention must go to ‘Halo Of Flies’ which was complete and the band pulled it off brilliantly, although Alice’s mic didn’t work at the start. There was also a drum solo from Glen Sobel thrown in here, which wasn’t too long. ‘Muscle Of Love’ also made an appearance, and I cannot remember Alice ever playing this on any of the occasions I have seen him previously, and there have been a few.

The only new track he did was ‘I’ll Bite Your Face Off,’ which was a bit of a surprise for me, and I wouldn’t say it was the best off the album, but everybody seemed to like it, and know it. Also, most notable on the left side of the stage was Alice’s new guitarist, a young lady called Orianthe, who would have been Michael Jackson’s guitarist, for the unfulfilled ‘This Is It’ tour. Brutal Planet, ‘Hey Stoopid,’ ‘Only Women Bleed’ and ‘Poison,’ were in there too, along with ‘We’re All Clones,’ which isn’t a regular. Alice stabbed the photographer during ‘Wicked Young Man,’ after which he was guillotined, his head doing its own encore to the end part of ‘I Love The Dead.’ The main set was brought to an end with ‘School’s Out,’ mixed with ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ and a complete Alice did ‘Elected’ as the encore, waving the Union Jack and blowing leaves at everyone.

Yes, it may not be ‘shocking’ these days, and some people may think it’s comical, but as an entertainer it’s hard to find anyone to beat Alice.
