Title

A winner through and through.

Anyone who knows me will be surprised that I'm reviewing this new album by the band Vain, why? Well it's because if you were to look through my record collection, you would find a wide range of genres from AOR right through to prog, but what you would not find would be many (by this I mean less than ten) glam rock albums. This is because glam has always been a style of music I just could not get my head around with it being too raw and basic for my tastes.

Why then am I writing about Vain and their new album 'Enough Rope'? Well because it's very good, that's why! And from a "glamaphobe" that is very high praise indeed! Vain as many of you will know have been around for quite some time now; 22 years and counting to be precise, and this will only be my second visit to their music, their debut album 'No Respect' in '89 being my first. So, onto the new album...

I always had in my mind that glam bands were average musicians who could only just about play their instruments. On this showing, however, I have to hold my hands up and say I was wrong because when Vain get things going with 'Greener' a riff-heavy track coupled with the inimitable vocals of Davy Vain and a nice chorus to boot, they show that they can play and write strong melodic songs, which I just wasn't expecting them to do. 'Hot Stage Lights' follows and again the riff is king on this song, which is a slow burning rocker with a powerful rhythm forcing the track along, 'Stray Kitten' is another catchy hook-filled cut with a driving guitar riff and dare I say great vocals (I dare); 'Treasure Girl' is next and it's the obligatory ballad, nice enough but done a million times before. Title track 'Enough Rope' follows and it rocks and rolls with that L.A Attitude as it crashes from the speakers, plus again it has a great hook. And that is the thing that made me sit up take notice and change my mind the most about this act and its music (well on 'Enough Rope' anyway). The way that each of the tracks on this album have big choruses, ones that you just can't help to enjoy as you listen to them, which I thought this kind of band couldn't do (sorry!).

So then a few questions to end. Will I now give up my "glamophobe" position regarding glam rock? Definitely (probably) NOT! Will I also now rush out to buy lots of glam rock albums? Again, probably not. But (and this is all down to 'Enough Rope' and the band called Vain), I will try to be more open-minded when I listen to this type of music again (never thought I'd say that). But this is a winner through and through!
