Quality rock music with thought provoking lyrics.

Despite this being the Swedish quintet's fifth release since forming back in 1999, this is the first time I've come across the music of Andromeda. And if the contents of 'Manifest Tyranny' are anything to go by then I've been missing out big time because this album is a master class in progressive metal. The material on this album may have its feet planted in the here and now with its contemporary almost power metal sound. But its heart and soul recalls the golden age of progressive rock. Throwbacks to the heady days of the 70's and early 80's can be heard in the Pink Floyd inspired vocal passages of 'Chosen By God' and a bit of early Marillion crops up in 'Stay Unaware'. You could even say that the delicate bass and acoustic guitar that permeates 'Survival Of The Richest' has a certain modern day Iron Maiden intro feel about it. But unlike Maiden's recent output it builds into fantastic song due in no small part to emotive, fragile vocals of David Fremberg.

The band may show their progressive rock influences but Andromeda have a sound all of their own, whether it be the all out metal assault of 'Play Dead' or 'Preemptive Strike'; the subtle melodies of 'Go Back To Sleep'; the commercial accessibility of lead track 'Lies 'R' Us' with its chugging riff, superlative guitar melodies and hook laden chorus or the electronic beats and stabbing riffs of 'Asylum'. They really have all the bases covered. The real centerpiece of the album for me is 'False Flag' with its various sonic twists and turns and well placed sound bites as it takes on politicians past and present who choose to wage war under false pretenses.

To be able to move from brutal heaviness to the lightest of touch with such breathtaking ease, it's clear that were are dealing with a group of stellar musicians here. Everyone plays their part from the swirling retro keyboards and delicate piano provided by Martin Hedin; the touch and feel of guitarist Johan Reinholdz and the clean tones of vocalist David Fremberg who is up there with the likes of Roy Khan in terms of ability and range. New bassist Linus 'Mr. Gul' Abrahamson seems to have fitted in nicely holding his own with the technical and inventive patterns and fills of drummer Thomas Lejon.

So if you are a progressive metal/rock fan or just a fan of quality rock music with thought provoking lyrics (is it still politically correct to use the term thinking man's metal?) then I'd say this album is a must have purchase.
