Cage at their best.

San Diego-based band Cage is back -- just to prove that a traditional approach towards heavy/power metal never becomes outdated. From the perfectly clichéd cover and a fine-looking booklet (hats off to album artwork from Marc Sasso) to the skull-crushing sound the album delivers, this record is everything metal. And while this headbanging, fist-pumping madness is certainly nothing original or innovative, on the other hand Cage have once again proven themselves to be the excellent craftsmen in their genre.

Just listen to the first track of the album-- 'Bloodsteel'. It simply runs headlong! A perfect example of what this band is all about: Sean Peck's incredible vocal range and the intensity of his parts, wild drum pounding and insane guitar riffs. There is a new blood in the band in person of bassist Steve Brogden and lead guitarist Garret Petters -- their thrash/black metal roots seem to be a revitalizing force for the group. This becomes obvious in songs such as 'War of the Undead' or the epic 'Hell Destroyer vs. Metal Devil', in the galloping pace of somewhat Viking metal-oriented 'Flying Fortress', in hard hitting that 'Doctor Doom' provides... Track after track, the album is nothing revelatory but every second is perfect, with no blatant filler among the songs. King Diamond-like falsettos? 'Annaliese Michel' is more of that than King Diamond himself would deliver. A slight touch of 80's metal cliché? There it is, the anthemic 'Metal Empire' praising the genre with a relentless fervour. This would have been feted to become a massive metal anthem, if only it had been released twenty years ago. Still it does not come too hard to imagine oneself amongst thousands of fists pumping in the air not only to the aforementioned song, but also to the heavy metal monstrosity this band delivers throughout the whole album.

'Supremacy of Steel' is simply Cage at their best. The band clearly did not wish not to surprise or experiment with their sound - thus this record might, at first, have been considered a little trite. Still, it sounds intense and heavy enough to fill a remarkable position in the band's catalogue. Simpler than that, it could be said that the three mighty characters on the album cover (Odin, the Grim Reaper and Satan) have done a great job watching over and somewhat supporting Cage... or maybe, that the band was good enough to not need any assistance?
